Research at the Lanna research station started already in 1929. It is run by the Swedish Agricultural University SLU.

Lanna is an ICOS ecosystem station and the only agricultural site within ICOS Sweden. It has a strong focus on elucidating the control mechanisms for production and emissions of laughing gas N₂O during winter periods.

Lanna (58°20′N, 13°06′E, 75 m asl) is located about 120 km north-east of Gothenburg on a large agriculturally used area plain.

The site is flat and homogeneous, making it close to ideal for micrometeorological studies.

The ICOS site is operated by at the University of Gothenburg by the group of Leif Klemedtsson. Per Weslien is the station principal investigator.

The soil was classified as an Uderic Haploboroll (USDA) with two diagnostic horizons, a Mollic epipedon and a Cambic horizon.

The clay content increases with depth, 45.1% in 0-30 cm, 57.2% in 60-90 cm and 58.4% in the 60-90 cm layer.

Top soil pH is 6.8 and sub-soil pH 7.0-7.2.

Organic carbon content is 3.4% in the top-soil and 0.6 and 0.0% in the sub-soil layers.

The soil structure was described as strong coarse subangular blocky in the top-soil and strong fine to medium angular blocky and strong coarse angular blocky in the sub-soil layers.

The soil is normally unsaturated to a depth of 2.2 m and this zone is characterized by numerous cracks and biotic macro-pores.

The cultivated area of the farm is about 155 ha and the farm is operated without livestock since 1958. Cereal crops as winter wheat, spring barley, and spring oats, as well as oil seed rape (winter or spring) are common crops in the area.

Besides standard ICOS measurements more than 50 other different field trials are carried out at the research station. Topics are amongst others fertilization, pesticides, different soil management, and new varieties.

At present, an experimental setup comprising six 1 ha test plots, each equipped with a CO₂ and CH₄ concentration gradient detection setup, is being operated by Gothenburg University in the field immediately adjacent to the ICOS setup.
